Clyde Griffiths, a poor young man desperate to rise in society, becomes entangled with two women and ultimately commits murder. Dreiser's monumental novel was banned in Boston in 1927 by the Watch and Ward Society for its frank depiction of sexuality, seduction, and moral corruption, and was banned in a Boston bookstore chain amid the "Banned in Boston" campaign.
