Native Son
Richard Wright
Bigger Thomas, a young Black man trapped by poverty and racism in 1930s Chicago, accidentally kills a white woman and becomes the subject of a manhunt. Wright's explosive novel was selected by the Book-of-the-Month Club only after Wright agreed to tone down some sexual content; it was banned from the libraries of multiple American cities and remains one of the most challenged books dealing with race in the United States.
