An American man in Paris, engaged to a woman, falls into a passionate love affair with an Italian bartender named Giovanni. Baldwin's second novel was rejected by his American publisher, who feared it would damage his reputation; it was challenged in school districts for its homosexual themes and remains one of the earliest major American novels to center a gay relationship.
